Release Highlight October 16, 2026: Use Wildcards to Identify Every Version of an App

Available Now Wildcard support for app identifiers was enabled for all customers on October 26, 2026.

We've added wildcard support to the Windows app Identifier and MacOS package name fields in your Apps list in the Admin Portal so one entry can cover different versions and editions of the same app.

What's New

Company Managers can now enter an asterisk (*) in an app's identifier or package name when adding it to the Apps list. A single entry then matches every version and edition of that app. The asterisk can go at the beginning, in the middle, or at the end of the entry, and it matches any sequence of characters, including none. For example, Microsoft Edge* matches Microsoft Edge, Microsoft Edge Beta, and Microsoft Edge Dev, and Python 3.* (64-bit) matches Python 3.11 (64-bit) and Python 3.12 (64-bit).

Before, the identifier had to match exactly. When a vendor update changed an app's name, for example by adding a version number, users weren't able to launch the app with the new name from Blue Border until you updated the entry in your Apps list. A wildcard entry keeps working through those updates.

Get Started

Use an asterisk in the Windows app Identifier or macOS package name field wherever you want one entry to cover multiple versions or editions of an app. We recommend updating any existing apps where app versions have caused issues in the past and using this approach for new apps going forward.
