Release Note April 7, 2025: New Mac Permission: Install Security Certificates

With the release of MacOS 15.4, Apple now requires that users approve any certificates that are installed on their devices.

Venn installs two certificates during the application installation process that enable each company to apply Web Proxy and Web Filtering Policies to internet activity in Blue Border. Previously, these certificates were installed silently by Venn, meaning that the user did not need to approve them. However, with this change from Apple, users will need to approve the installation of these certificates (even if they were installed previously).

Due to these security changes, Mac users will see a new permission screen asking them to install security certificates.

What will users see?

When existing Mac users access Venn, they will see a message letting them know that they need to enable Mac permissions to use Venn.

When they click Next, they will see the Install Security Certificates screen.

This screen will not appear again if you follow the instructions to allow the update to your settings.

Brand-new users will see a similar permission screen as part of the Mac Permissions Guide, which opens automatically once they have finished installing Workplace on their Mac computer.

What should users do when they see the permission screen?

When you see the new permission screen, click to open the pop-up and enter your device password and click Update Settings or authenticate using Touch ID.

Because Venn installs two certificates on users’ devices, the pop-up will appear twice, and you will need to complete both pop-ups.

If you click Cancel you will not be able to work in Blue Border. If you clicked Cancel by mistake, sign out and sign back into Venn. Venn will continue to show the permission screen each time you log into Venn until you have allowed the update to your settings.

Why does Venn need to install certificates?

Venn installs two certificates during the application installation process that enable each company to apply Web Proxy and Web Filtering Policies to internet activity in Blue Border. These policies help to keep users' work-related web browsing secure, compliant, and aligned with your company's policies.

What happens if users don’t allow the updates?

Users must input their password and click Update Settings or authenticate using Touch ID when the pop-up appears in order to work in Blue Border.

If users click Cancel, Venn's proxy service will not be able to start, which will prevent them from working in Blue Border.

If you clicked Cancel by mistake, sign out and sign back into Venn. Apple will continue to show the popups each time you log into Venn until you have allowed the update to your settings.
