LZ:103.03 Working with Files in LocalZone™

As we mentioned previously, you are able to work locally and in LocalZone™, all on the same device.

LocalZone™ vs. Local File Managers

Your work files are stored in - and restricted to - the Workplace drive. When you launch File Manager from the LocalZone™ (Figure 1 - right image), you will see your Workplace drive listed, and:

  • Your Personal folder [your name] is mapped to the Documents folder.
  • The Secure Downloads folder is mapped to the Downloads folder.

You can save/copy/move files into the LocalZone™ File Manager from your computer, emails, etc. but you cannot transmit data out of the LocalZone™.

If you are working with personal data, you can also launch a local instance of File Manager (Figure 1 - left image). However, the Workplace drive will not appear in the local File Manager because it is not accessible outside of the LocalZone™

When you open a new or existing Office document, make changes, and click Save, your personal folder is conveniently mapped as the default Documents folder. File> Save defaults to the This PC> [Your Name]. You can always change your default folder.

File access is set by your DLP Work File Access controls. When your access is restricted and you open a locally stored document into the LocalZone™, you are able to edit the document, but you will need to click Save As and save it to your Workplace Drive because you are unable to save work documents outside of the LocalZone™. This restriction is meant to protect your data and help you get to work without worry that you might unintentionally share data outside the LocalZone™.

DLP Policy for Files

  • Copy/Paste/Move is within the LocalZone™ only and cannot go outside the container.
  • Downloads are always redirected to the Secure Downloads folder for consistency across platforms, and across local and hybrid. The folder is also mapped to This PC in your LocalZone™ File Manager.
  • As you learned in E:100 VDA Essentials, you have a Personal and Company folder where your company files are stored. You can work with those files within the LocalZone™ only. Also, you can click and drag any file into those folders and subfolders from your LocalZone™ File Manager.
