Company Managers can configure installation options for all Apps in Venn for Windows and Mac so that users can get the work apps that they need quickly and easily.

You can configure automatic installation, whereby Venn can download the app in the background if the user chooses, and/or manual installation, whereby users can follow a direct link to the page where they should download the app. We recommend configuring both options for all apps added in Venn for Windows and Mac.

Automatic Installation for Windows

For Windows, you can configure automatic installation using the publicly available Winget platform or by uploading a .exe, .msi, or .msix installer file.

To configure automatic installation using Winget:

  1. Get the Winget package ID on the Winget site.
    1. Search for the app by name.
    2. Copy the code under How to install.
    3. Use the portion of the code after 'winget install -e --id' as the Install package ID. For example, the code for Google Chrome is 'winget install -e --id Google.Chrome' and the Install package ID is 'Google.Chrome'.
  2. If not yet checked, check the Windows box on the Installation tab of the App Settings page.
  3. If not yet checked, check Enable automatic installation.
  4. If not yet selected, select Winget Package ID.
  5. Input the Install package ID.
  6. Venn will add the silent install parameter on the client side.
  7. Optionally, specify Install parameters. For example, you may want to specify an install path or component selection. If left blank, this will default to silent install, meaning that the software will install without user interaction.
  8. Click Save in the top right.

To configure automatic installation using a custom installer file:

  1. If not yet checked, check the Windows box on the Installation tab of the App Details page.
  2. If not yet checked, check Enable automatic installation.
  3. Select the Installer file option under Enable automatic installation.
  4. Upload the .exe, .msi, or .msix installer file.
  5. Optionally, specify Install parameters. For example, you may want to specify an install path or component selection. If left blank, this will default to silent install, meaning that the software will install without user interaction.
  6. Optionally, check Install using admin rights, which allows the app to be installed for all users on a computer.
  7. Click Save in the top right.

Automatic Installation for Mac

For Mac, you can configure automatic installation by uploading a .pkg or .dmg installer file.

  1. If not yet checked, check the Mac box on the Installation tab of the App Settings page.
  2. If not yet checked, check Enable automatic installation. The Installer file option will automatically be selected.
  3. Upload the .pkg or .dmg installer file.
  4. Optionally, specify Install parameters. For example, you may want to specify an install path or component selection. If left blank, this will default to silent install, meaning that the software will install without user interaction.
  5. Optionally, check Install using admin rights, which allows the app to be installed for all users on a computer.
  6. Click Save in the top right.

Manual Installation for Windows and Mac

For Windows and Mac, you can provide a link to the installer for the application so that the user can manually install it.

  1. If not yet checked, check the Windows or Mac box on the Installation tab of the App Details page.
  2. If not yet checked, check Enable manual installation
  3. Add the URL in the required field.
  4. Click Save in the top right.

Remember to follow the steps above to enable manual installation for both Windows and Mac if the app is available for both OS.

How to Locate Windows and Mac Identifiers

When adding or configuring an app in Venn, you must include the Windows and/or Mac Identifier so that Venn can launch the app when end users click on it from Workplace. If the app has multiple identifiers, include all of them separated by commas.

Windows App Identifiers

The Windows App Identifier is the Windows Application User Model ID (AUMID, also known as AppId) for the app.

A few things to note about Windows App Identifiers:

  • The App Identifier can be a shortcut name or executable name.
  • For ClickOnce applications, specify the full URL.
  • Specifying the application path will not work as the Windows App Identifier.
  • Venn locates the .LNK shortcut file in these locations: Desktop, AppData, Start menu.

Learn how to find the AppID for an application downloaded on your device.

Mac App Identifiers

The Mac App Identifier is the macOS package name, or the name used for the application bundle.

Navigate to the page in these instructions and copy the app’s Name & Extension for an application downloaded on your device.

Common App Identifiers

The table below contains commonly used applications and their respective Windows Identifier and macOS package details.

Microsoft Excel Excel Microsoft Excel.app
File Manager File Explorer Finder.app
